Nagoya Castle's main tower keep is planned to be demolished and reconstructed in wood, but the project is not expected to be completed until 2032. Nonetheless, visitors can no longer enter the current structure given concerns regarding its earthquake resistance.

I visited Nagoya Castle shortly after visiting Matsumoto Castle (which is one of if not the most well-preserved original castles). Learning that the current castle was a concrete reconstruction and seeing what it looked like up close and inside was quite a let down. The current structure is being demolished this year (2019) and reconstruction is (at the time of writing) slated for completion around 2022. It will be neat to see the new wooden reconstruction. The park surrounding Nagoya Castle is a pleasant place to stroll, enjoy a day outside or take in a matsuri. It should also offer awesome photo opportunities again once the reconstruction is complete.

Even if the keep was close for the renovation at the time I visited (2018), but the reconstructed palace was open . It it an absolutely gorgeous place. Along with the original Palace of Nijo-jo and the reconstructed palace of Kumamoto castle, this is the only palace that I have seen in Japan. The woodworking, the decorations and the painting are really beautiful. I am glad I went even if it there was a line to enter . Really looking forward to see what they will do with the main keep.
