This used to be my favorite castle in Japan and it probably still is. I visited twice before the earthquake and once after. Unlike many other castles in Japan that appear very much like mere tourist attractions, this one looks (and feels) like a real castle. The castle keep is impressive and the beautifully reconstructed palace with its golden ornaments and sliding doors just beautiful. Even with the serious damage it suffered from the earthquake in April 2016, it is still beautiful. You can see the aftermath in the castle keep and it visualizes the devastating impact the earthquake made. However, despite being under reconstruction, it is totally worth a visit. Make a wish at the Shrine right next to the castle and maybe donate a small amount to help to rebuild the castle.

I visited in 2019 and they were just starting to reopen some parts after the reconstruction work after the earthquake. But you can still see the damage and it wasn't possible to enter the castle itself. Still, if you are around Kumamoto I can fully recommend to visit the castle too! There is a small "village" at the foot of the castle with shops and information, and you can support the people of the city who also suffered from the earthquake as well as the expensive and time consuming rebuild of Kumamoto castle by buying some of the souvenirs there, especially the super cute mascot Kumamon!

I visited Kyushu 12 years ago. I visited Kumamoto as a day trip from my hostel in Fukuoka. The castle was stunning and expansive. I especially enjoyed the views from the keep tower, the grand residence hall, and the historic documents from the Satsuma Rebellion in the 1870s. Kumamoto Castle is well worth visiting.
