Imperial Palace located in the very center of Tokyo is closed for the public as it's the residence of the Emperor of Japan. But it's possible to walk around for free. The palace is surrounded by the East Imperial Gardens that are very beautiful and offer great places to rest and enjoy the greenery. I particularly like traditional Japanese garden and walking alleys. in the moat around the Imperial Palace's grounds you can see swans and turtles. But of the palace only roofs are visible.

One of the best places to do an uninterrupted 5 km run in the heart of the city while enjoying views of the palace, wide open spaces, the moats, Tokyo Station, and some of the city's landmark buildings.

While the public grounds of the palace have been designed and landscaped with security over beauty in mind, they still impress. Plenty of open spaces, excellent views, old Edo castle remnants and even an Imperial collection museum all add to the appeal. A word for families, though. While there is nothing here to stop children enjoying themselves, the grounds were not designed with children in mind so don't expect play equipment or things of that nature.
