I visited the Zao Onsen and Mountain in July 2020, I hiked from Zao Onsen through cable car and chairlift, which offers a plesant view of the abundant nature surrounding this beautiful area, the hike to Zao crater is about 2 hours each way, with an everchanging scenery depending on altitude, in alternatice is possible to reach the vicinity of the viewpoint ofr the crater by car. The volcanic lake itself is very unique, one of the most beautiful sceneries I have seen in Japan, that reminded me of the volcanic scene of New Zealand. Please go there if you hav a chance, the Tohoku region (north of Honshu) of Japan is really remarkable
